Een Vrije Internationale Universiteit: De waarde van kunstenaars die onderwijspraktijken opzetten, van Joseph Beuys in Noord-Ierland tot de Documenta in 2022
Deze lezing zal van Joseph Beuys en “zijn” Free International University uitgaan (https://www.tate.org.uk/research/tate-papers/31/beuys-legacy-artist-led-university-projects) en presenteert ook nieuwe inzichten uit recente gesprekken met medestrijders uit Derry, Noord Ierland tussen 1974 en 1979. Documenta 6, 1977, bleef de meest concrete manifestatie van deze groep. Hoewel men dus van een “mislukking” kan spreken, zal Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes de verschillende trajecten van de deelnemers kort schetsen. Hiermee laat ze de bandbreedte zien van wat ze “instituting” noemt of zelfs “state craft” in en door kunst.
Dit verhaal is volgens haar interessant, omdat er nu in verschillende opzichten soortgelijke globale maatschappelijke problemen en mogelijkheden spelen zoals in de jaren 70. Documenta fifteen, 2022, kan als een verzameling van gerelateerde initiatieven worden gezien. Betekent dit dat Beuys, kunsthistorisch gesproken, globaal invloed heeft gehad – of welke andere manieren van kijken zijn er misschien nog interessanter?
Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes is hoogleraar moderne en hedendaagse kunstgeschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Onlangs leidde zij de Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture. Tot 2014 was zij hoogleraar Iconologie in Belfast, waar zij een Research Graduate School leidde. Afkomstig uit Jena, studeerde ze in Heidelberg, Londen en Keulen, waar ze promoveerde (onderzoek gedaan als James Joyce Foundation Scholar, Zürich). Haar onderzoek richt zich op sociale kunstpraktijken, woord- en beeldstudies, visuele erfenissen van (Ierse) schrijvers, naoorlogse kunstgeschiedenissen, art research, performance, de geschiedschrijving van kunst en curatie. Haar boeken omvatten: W.G. Sebald’s Artistic Legacies: Memory, Word and Image (co-ed., Amsterdam University Press 2023); Brian O’Doherty/Patrick Ireland: Word, Image and Institutional Critique (ed., Valiz 2017); Post-War Germany and ‘Objective Chance’: W.G. Sebald, Joseph Beuys and Tacita Dean (Steidl 2011); James Joyce als Inspirationsquelle für Joseph Beuys (Olms 2001); en Joyce in Art (Lilliput 2004). Zij heeft internationaal gecureerd.

A Free International University: The currency of artists instituting educational practices from Joseph Beuys in Northern Ireland to Documenta in 2022
This lecture will depart from Joseph Beuys and “his” Free International University (https://www.tate.org.uk/research/tate-papers/31/beuys-legacy-artist-led-university-projects) and will also present new insights from recent conversations with fellow fighters from Derry, Northern Ireland between 1974 and 1979. Documenta 6, 1977, remained the most concrete manifestation of this group. Although one can thus speak of a “failure”, Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes will briefly outline the different trajectories of the participants. In doing so, she will show the bandwidth of what she calls “instituting” or even “state craft” in and through art.
She says this story is interesting because, in several respects, there are similar global social problems and potentialities now as in the 1970s. Documenta fifteen, 2022, can be seen as a collection of related initiatives. Does this mean that, art-historically speaking, Beuys was globally influential – or what other ways of looking at it might be more interesting?
Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes is Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History, University of Amsterdam. She recently directed the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture. Until 2014 she was Professor of Iconology in Belfast, where she led a Research Graduate School. Originating from Jena, she studied in Heidelberg, London and Cologne, where she gained her PhD (researched as James Joyce Foundation Scholar, Zurich). Her research focuses on social art practices, word and image studies, visual legacies of (Irish) writers, post-War art histories, art research, performance, the historiography of art and curation. Her books include: W.G. Sebald’s Artistic Legacies: Memory, Word and Image (co-ed., Amsterdam University Press 2023); Brian O’Doherty/Patrick Ireland: Word, Image and Institutional Critique (ed., Valiz 2017); Post-War Germany and ‘Objective Chance’: W.G.
